Leicester City sign defender Luis Hernandez

The Foxes swoop for their second signing of the summer, bringing in defender Luis Hernandez on a free transfer.

The rumours have swirled on since the moment the season ended and now Leicester has secured its second confirmed signing of the summer transfer window. Who could it be? Troy Deeney for £30m? Islam Slimani or Ahmed Musa for £25m? Or perhaps an exciting midfielder like Gylfi Sigurdsson or Nampalys Mendy...

Many of the pictures seem to include Cristiano Ronaldo. Read carefully, however, and you'll notice that we haven't signed Real Madrid's main man. Luis Hernandez, a fairly unheralded centre back will join the Foxes on a four year deal after his contract at Sporting Gijon expires.

Unexciting perhaps, but then the best deals often are. How many thought the signing of Championship journeyman Wes Morgan or a short term loan deal for Stoke reject Robert Huth would lay the foundations for a Premier League title. Defenders are funny like that.

I'll admit I don't watch much Gijon football, and I'm not an expert on the player himself, so let's look at what we know and see how that tallies with that we've done before.

  1. Many people haven't heard of him - hands up who'd heard of Kanté or Mahrez? No one? Sounds like a plus to me then.
  2. Former Real Madrid youth player - as Danny Drinkwater, Danny Simpson, Richie de Laet, Matty James etc can attest, we've had some success with players trained at big academies.
  3. Struggled against the drop and survived in his side's first year back - most of our current squad did this and they look alright.
  4. Signed for free from one of the best leagues in Europe - worked pretty well for Fuchs, Albrighton etc

The same scouts who signed all our other players also clearly wanted him. That's enough for me and hopefully for you too. I mean, he's a back up centre back, so don't expect Kanté impact, but there's been plenty of talk that we'll need a bigger, deeper squad next year and we are now slightly deeper.

Furthermore, this is a rumour that's been about all year and it's now happened. I'm sure two more won't spring forth to take it's place...
